One of the most debilitating inflammatory arthritic conditions affecting men, and one of the most common too, Gout used to be called \u201cthe rich man\u2019s disease\u201d because it was linked to rich foods and drinks that once only the wealthy could afford.<\/p>\n<h3>What is Gout?<\/h3>\n<p>Uric acid can sometimes build up too high in the body and then form small crystals which find their way into our joints.<\/p>\n<p>Gout is not caused by \u2018acid foods\u2019. Not everyone who drinks alcohol is affected by gout either. So, what is the truth about diet and gout attacks?<\/p>\n<h3>Managing Attacks<\/h3>\n<p>One of the best ways to manage the frequency of attacks, or prevent painful flare-ups, is to manage a healthy weight. If you\u2019re overweight, try to drop 10% of your weight to start with.<\/p>\n<h3>What to Avoid<\/h3>\n<p>Certain foods are high in purines which some (not all) men find can contribute to an attack.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2715244 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.healthyman.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/red-wine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"704\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.healthyman.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/red-wine.jpg 704w, https:\/\/www.healthyman.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/red-wine-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.healthyman.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/red-wine-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organ meats<\/li>\n<li>Shellfish<\/li>\n<li>Sardines<\/li>\n<li>Anchovies<\/li>\n<li>Vegemite<\/li>\n<li>And yes, some drinks like beer and red wine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you feel that one of the foods these may be contributing to your gout, cut right back.
